VLC can open many network streams, but a YouTube watch-page URL is not a permanent link to a video file. A method that worked with one VLC and YouTube combination can fail after either service changes.
Choose the download method for the job#
For offline viewing, check the download feature offered by YouTube for your account, device and region. An offline item inside an app is not necessarily an ordinary file you can copy or edit. If you uploaded the video, use the account's own video-download or export tools.
See YouTube's help documentation for the available options, and VideoLAN's documentation for VLC's network playback controls.
About the old Codec Information workaround#
An older workaround opened a YouTube URL in VLC and copied a media location from the codec information window. That procedure depends on a playback integration that can change. Signed media URLs can expire, and playback support can vary.
Use files you own or have permission to download. Do not paste account cookies into an unfamiliar tool to make a broken workaround run. If the problem is playback rather than saving a file, start with the buffering checks.
