The WhatsApp policy debate in early 2021 prompted readers to compare messaging services. The earlier post mixed unverified signup totals, imprecise privacy claims and an incorrect attribution. Those details should not be treated as a reliable account of user behavior.
Separate message content from service data#
End-to-end encryption concerns who can read protected communication between endpoints. It does not mean that a service processes no account information, contact metadata or other operational data. WhatsApp describes its protection in Privacy at a Glance.
Comparisons also need to identify the conversation type. Telegram's FAQ distinguishes cloud chats from Secret Chats. Signal describes its own approach on its official documentation site. Do not assume that every chat mode in every service has the same properties.
Ask a narrower privacy question#
Consider who you communicate with, the devices linked to the account, how backups work and whether you need conversations to synchronize through a provider's cloud. Then read the current documentation for that particular arrangement.
This is a corrected historical overview, not a ranking based on old download figures. The original publication date remains. For one account control you can check directly, review the WhatsApp linked-device list.
